Sparta officer retires after 26 years

    SPARTA — Township Police Lieutenant Jeffrey R. Nafis a 26-year-veteran of the department retired on March 31.

    Nafis was hired by the department on Feb. 18, 1986 after being honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps.

    Officer Nafis was initially assigned to the patrol division after graduating from the Morris County Police and Fire Academy. On Sept. 1, 1991, Nafis was appointed to the detective bureau where he served until being promoted to the rank of detective sergeant in April of 1992.

    He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on Oct. 2, 1995, where he assumed the duties of the administrative commander. A life long resident of Sparta, Nafis and his wife Maureen will continue to make Sparta their home.

    The retirement of the Lt. Nafis has reduced the department’s current staffing level to 28 sworn officers.
